The Menai Strait between island of Anglesey and the mainland of Wales is crossed by two bridges, The Menai Suspension Bridge (Welsh: Pont Grog y Borth) designed by Thomas Telford and completed in 1826, it is one of the first modern suspension bridges in the world; and Britannia Bridge (Welsh: Pont Britannia) originally designed and built by Robert Stephenson as a tubular bridge of wrought iron rectangular box-section spans for carrying rail traffic. Following a fire in 1970 it was rebuilt as a two-tier steel truss arch bridge, carrying both road and rail traffic.
